FAmily STart (FAST) Learning and Support Services, a division of the UIC Center for Literacy in the College of Education, empowers and strengthens Head Start families in Chicago. Our mission is to provide access to high-quality, research-based learning opportunities in collaboration with community partners. The Adult Education and Career Transition Program is an important part of achieving FAST’s mission and vision. Current and future Chicago Early Learning/Head Start parents interested in continuing their basic education are enrolled in or referred to classes/tutoring in English-as-a-Second Language, High School Equivalency (in English or Spanish) and literacy/numeracy. Learners also receive case management services, career transition support, and technology training.

Job Summary: This position facilitates the process of helping adult education students transition to post-secondary education and job opportunities.The Ideal candidate will have a strong working knowledge of the adult education, workforce development, and higher education systems as well as a general understanding of the social and supportive services that are available in the Chicago area.

Job Responsibilities

•      Reporting to Career Transition Specialist, the Transitions Support Specialist promotes job development and provides referrals to post-secondary options.

•      Teaches basic digital literacy to adult students.

•      Assists in the development of students’ career development and post -secondary transition plans in collaboration with the Career Transitions Specialist.

•      Provides students with job readiness support.

•      Maintains monthly contact with graduates and/or transitioned students.

•      Documents case notes and referrals using the appropriate system and processes.

•      Utilizes the College and Career Readiness Standards (CCR) to promote research based best practices.

•      Collaborates with Career Transitions Specialist to coordinate services with Case Managers, Lead Teacher, and key staff to coordinate services.

•      Facilitates peer-to-peer employment and supportive services groups between FAST locations.

•      Support recruitment effort, as needed.

•      Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications/Skills

•      Bilingual preferred.

•      Ability to read, understand, and express oneself clearly and effectively in oral and written communication.

•      Strong organizational, interpersonal, planning, and follow up skills.

•      Ability to lead discussions, facilitate meetings, and work collaboratively with a dynamic group of colleagues.

•      Case management, counseling, coaching, and advising with individuals and group sessions.

•      Strong technology skills.

•      Effective communication with a diverse group of clients.

•      Negotiation and conflict resolution skills.

•      Working knowledge of human nature.

•      Bachelors Required with 1-3 years related experience.

Salary: $35,000-$40,000

Travel: some travel required between FAST locations primarily on the Southwest side of Chicago and to program related meetings.
