The Chicago Area Writing Project (CAWP), is one of 200 sites of the National Writing Project (NWP), a network of professional development sites anchored at colleges and universities that is committed to improving the teaching of writing and learning in schools in communities. Since 1979, the CAWP has served over 25,000 educators in its professional development programs. Throughout the school year, CAWP offers Friday and Saturday workshops, as well as school programs. It also hosts a yearly Invitational Summer Institute for teachers with at least three years of experience.

Supported by Hive Chicago, CAWP is partnering with the UIC College of Education, Chicago Public Schools, Digital Youth Network, and the UIC Institute for Public Policy and Civic Engagement to plan a Youth Writing for Civic Engagement initiative. Affiliated faculty are developing a Maker Space scheduled to open in 2018 in the College of Education with a significant focus on digital media composing, and are also participating in the Connected Learning in Teacher Education network that seeks to harness new media technologies and human networks to support interest-driven, production-centered learning that bridges in- and out-of-school and intergenerational disconnects.
