The Center for Literacy Visiting Research Specialist for Adult Education Programs collaborate with Principal Investigators to develop and implement research-based educational programs to assure high-quality adult education preparation classes for Head Start parents and adult learners seeking a high school equivalency and English language skills. Research Specialist will present research findings to modify and enhance current program structure.Duties:

  • Evaluating instructional materials based upon adult education and adult second language learning pedagogy
  • Observe, collect information and analyze adult education courses and participant feedback
  • Supervising graduate assistants and volunteers on techniques & procedures
  • Analyzing data to assess student/program progress
  • Recommend program modifications to assure progress towards meeting program goals and objectives
  • Research funding options, collaborate on grant submissions by contributing research findings, publication materials and presentations
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, social science, or related field required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • In depth knowledge of adult education pedagogy including a minimum of three years of experience in the field.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred.

Seeking Tutors for Adult Literacy Programs Operated by UIC

 

$13/hour Federal Work Study Position

Be part of sites that offer various services to Head Start parents ranging from:

  • Adult GED tutoring in math, reading and writing in both English and Spanish
  • Tutoring multi-level adult learners in English as a Second Language (ESL)

 

REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be eligible for America Reads/Federal Work Study

(Contact the UIC Financial Aid Office to confirm if you are eligible for Federal Work Study)

  • Must be available to serve approximately 10-20 hours/week (includes transportation)
  • Available to work at least 3 hours in a row between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday
  • Able to speak, read, and write English fluently
  • Able to maintain satisfactory academic progress (2.0 GPA and 67% credit completion rate)
  • Enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours per semester
  • Bi-lingual English/Spanish speaking tutors are needed for our FAST GED/ESL Southwest location!
